This year, we’re celebrating 120 years of public library service at Crofton Park Library, a true local treasure with a remarkable history and an even brighter future.

Originally known as the Brockley Branch Library, our beloved Edwardian building opened its doors in 1905, built on land next to the railway station and funded by the generous Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie, the Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist, gave £9,000 to build two libraries in Lewisham: one here at Crofton Park and one at Lower Sydenham. In total, five Carnegie libraries were built across the borough, part of his global legacy of free libraries for all.

Designed by architect Alfred L. Guy and completed by local builder F. J. Gorham, the library’s eclectic charm, complete with its Dutch gable and octagonal tower, has made it a landmark for generations. Though it suffered significant damage during the Second World War, including the loss of its glass dome skylights, it was lovingly restored in the 1950s and has continued to serve the community ever since.

In 2010, Crofton Park Library faced possible closure, but our incredible local community came together to fight for it. Thanks to that passionate campaign, the library reopened in May 2011 and has been thriving ever since.

Now under the care of Calico Libraries (alongside Forest Hill, Manor House, and Sydenham Libraries), Crofton Park continues to go from strength to strength. Despite a national decline in library use, book issues and visitor numbers are higher than ever, proof of just how much this space means to our community.

Today, Crofton Park Library stands as one of the last true free public spaces: open, welcoming, and for everyone. Here’s to 120 years of stories, learning, connection, and community, and to many more to come!
