Work Experience and DofE
Information for Students, Parents and schools
We’re really pleased that you’re interested in doing your placement with the Calico Libraries. Our placements are a great opportunity to build confidence, learn new skills, and make a real contribution to your local community.
We welcome students who are enthusiastic about getting involved, so it’s important that you get in touch with us directly rather than through your parents or school. Taking responsibility for your own placement is the first step in showing you’re ready to learn, work as part of a team, and make the most of the experience.
Our most successful placements come from students who take that initiative, whether they’re completing their Duke of Edinburgh volunteering or doing a school work experience week. If you’re motivated, reliable, and keen to get involved, you’ll find your time with us both rewarding and enjoyable.
Before you apply, please read the information below carefully so you can decide if a library placement is right for you.
What we expect from placements
Take responsibility: We expect you, not your parents, to contact us and complete the application (unless you have specific needs).
Be reliable: Arrive on time and let us know straight away if you’re unwell or unable to attend.
Dress appropriately: Wear tidy, practical clothes suitable for a public workplace.
Stay focused: Mobile phones should not be used during placement hours except on breaks or in emergencies.
Work positively: Be polite, helpful, and respectful with staff and library visitors.
What you'll be doing
During your placement you may:
Help with shelving and keeping the library tidy.
Support activities and events where possible.
Learn how we help customers and run day-to-day services.

What you'll gain
By completing your placement, you will:
Learn new skills for school, work, and volunteering.
Build confidence in a public-facing environment.
Contribute to your local community.
If you have read all the information above and think that one of placements will be a good fit for you, please complete the application below and one of library managers will be in touch.
